Of the Hellenistic Gate between the Stoa Poikile and the Altar of Aphrodite very few traces survive, and these have led the excavators to a wholly speculative digital reconstruction, which we employed in its representation. We have elected the solution of an arched gate, representing the trophy and the mounted golden statue of Demetrios the Besieger, mentioned in the sources, on the basis of the remains discovered in a nearby well. The Gate still stands during the Roman period, without Demetrios’ statue. [Shear, T.L., ‘The Athenian Agora: Excavations of 1980-1982’, Hesperia 53 (1984), pp. 19-24].
