Few difficulties arise in the representation of this monument, thanks to the relatively good state in which it survives. The decoration of the orthostatai with guilloche on their bases, Lesbian cyma and astragal, has been represented on the basis of the one surviving orthostates. We have adopted the excavators’ theory, according to which the altar was situated in the east part of the monument, and was accessed by the priest via a stairway on its west part [Stilwell, R., ‘Architectural Studies. VI. The Altar’,
Hesperia 2 (1933), pp. 140-148].
