Notwithstanding the sweeping reappraisals brought about by M. Korres’ breakthrough conclusion [«Από τον Σταυρό στην Αρχαία Αγορά»,
Ηόρος 10-12 (1998), pp. 83-104] that the temple does not correspond to the hypothetical Temple of Ares in Acharnai, but to the Temple of Athena Pallene in the Stavros area, the restoration of the building's superstructure was not affected. The characteristic grey-greenish chlorite veins of its Pentelic marble allowed the effortless recognition of parts from its superstructure incorporated in other monuments, and it became apparent that the temple has a design roughly similar to that of the Temple of Hephaestus. Thus the digital reconstruction of the temple was largely based on the existing building of the Hephaesteion, in accordance to the theories of W.B. Dinsmoor [
Hesperia 9 (1940), pp. 1-52]
that these two temples were designed by the same architect. The temple’s sime is known, and it is thought to originate from the Temple of Poseidon in Sunium.
